Why do you think constrictive corsets and dress were so popular in the 19th Century?

I аm always puzzled аѕ tο whу women wore such restrictive clothes іn thе 19th Century. I аm nοt convinced bу thе traditionally assumed аnѕwеrѕ thаt feminism hаѕ tο offer bесаυѕе women wore thеm; thеу саn’t hаνе bееn stupid аѕ well аѕ breathless! AƖƖ уουr thουɡhtѕ wουƖԁ bе appreciated.

Stereotypes. Ever since before christ there has been a certain image of what you were supposed to look like. That is what it took to fit in so thats what people wore. Also in a culture so dominated by males the women wore what they thought would attract the best males.

Fashion – which was driven by the Royal courts and high society in those days, so everyone wanted the latest look. Also, in generalisation, women have always wanted small waists in western cultures as it is deemed more attractive that the more voluptuous figure. Just like today in fact.

corsets were worn to keep the ladies look slimmer.
