Where can I find sewing patterns for different corsets?
Synth asked:
I am looking for sewing patterns for corsets. A friend is getting married, and I have agreed to help her out by sewing undergarments for her bridal party. The women are to be dressed as Southern Belles circa 1850 (Think Gone With The Wind).
I am not looking for absoluely authentic patterns. Its not being judged by the 1850 costuming police. I just need a good corset pattern that will stand up to cinching the waist an inch or two, without being too bulky. If the patterns are a bit mroe modern or older in design, I can deal with that, noone will be seeing them.

The last time I saw something like that was at a museum in a 1910 Sears and Roebuck catalogue!
Good luck.
Try voguefabricsstore.com. They have a selection of patterns not usually carried in a fabric store as well as corset making supplies for sale. They do not have anyone on staff to answer questions about the process of making the corsets, but there is at least one really excellent book called “Corsets and Crinolines” by Norah Waugh. You can purchase that from amazon.com. You will not be able to find it at a local bookstore. That book has patterns in it as well, but you have to blow them up from 1/4″ scale– I’m assuming that you would rather have a pattern that’s already full scale and in a modern size. Many of Waugh’s patterns are actually from antique corsets and thus sized for very different bodies from ours. You could try looking for patterns at a local Jo-Ann or Hancock, but you definitely won’t be able to buy all your supplies there. Greenberg and Hammer in NYC carries the best selection of corset making supplies. You can find them at.
You’re smart to not worry too much about being real true to the period– I doubt you could get any of these women to lace as tight as you would need them to for historical accuracy. Good luck!
Try Joanne’s Fabric. They have everything that has to do with sewing in there.
